Mexico blanked Puerto Rico to access semi-final

WINNIPEG, Canada, June 5, 2008.-  Team Mexico blanked Puerto Rico in the quarterfinal. The Mexican squad outscored Puerto Rico 3-0 and created the first upsets of the tournament. Set scores were 25-22, 25-22, 25-19.

Mexico played a very consistent game tonight. They finished the game with a strong block from the 6’6 player, Thomas Aguilera, his fifth of the game. This win places them against Canada in the next round.

Thomas Aguilera led the Mexican effort with 13 points, followed by Irving Bricio and Leonardo Manzo, who got 12 and 11 points. Ulises Maldonado was the leader of Puerto Rico, achieving 17 points.

Mexican coach, Jorge Azair, declared: “I am very happy about this win. We started slow in the first two sets and made unnecessary mistakes, liking missing serves, but we played a very good third set.”

Julio Acevedo, captain of Puerto Rico added:  “Mexico did a very good job and put up a great fight. We did not play our best but I hope we learn from this experience and become more mature.”
